I was away at work this quiet afternoon. As the silence echoed, my mind drifted.
…the hum of the bees dancing around the tree, the chirp of birds flying across, the rustle of the dry shrubs, the din of my wheel…
I was all of ten when I had begun working on my pots. Schools were not there for us; I had no choice but to work on my pots. I picked up the art from my father who picked it up from his father. I stumbled in the beginning, slowly my work became more beautiful, and soon I mastered the craft. We used to sell pots to the other villagers; they used them in the kitchens. Only earthenware was used.
Now, I work more-I work harder, but I do not sell much. I have started to make tableware for exhibitions. My children have decided not to continue the craft. The lineage of pottery may stop with me. I have two sons, one works as a mason while the other as a driver.
I am glad I can continue to work from home. I am happy that I do not have to go elsewhere in search of work.
Education may help improve things. Doesn’t value increase when you are educated?
