What to say about my craft? I am from one of the few lacquer artisan families practicing lacquer craft for local communities. It’s very interesting to do this work but I am sad to say that now there are only 3-4 artisan who still do laquer practices in our village of Mishariyado.
Mishariyado is very far from the main towns in Kachchh. Due to the distance we are not able to find tourists or other traders in our village to sell our products. We are making stuff for Khamir, they keep us in business. I think to sustain the craft we need to convert our traditional products into useful tools and find a space for our work in the current market. We need to think differently to sustain our craft and craft process.
Because there is little market for our craft, my family is also doing other labour work to earn more money to cover our day to day living expenses. It would not be possible to live on the profits from our craft alone.
