Imagine a nation draped in Ajkrakh! Halim Khatri made this piece using the indigo color famous in Kachchh. While indigo is hard to make color fast, Halimbhai has done a beautiful job creating Bharat. This is amazingly the first time he has worked with indigo color! Halim tells us he was nervous to start out with, but he pushed himself to do the work confidently. This wall piece is a testament to his success.

How was this piece made

The process of making Ajrakh Blockprint

Printing an Ajrakh requires time and patience. Printers prepare fabric for printing by tearing un-dyed fabric into 9 meter lengths, washing it to remove starches, wax and impurities and then dying it with myrobalam. From a collection that may be up to 100 years old, artisans select a wooden block carved with traditional designs.
